Frequently Asked Questions about Myotherapy
1. What is Myotherapy (Massage Therapy)?
Myotherapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues to gain a therapeutic response. Soft tissues include muscles, skin, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments. Massage therapy provides an alternative health option to help alleviate the soft tissue discomfort associated with every day and occupational stresses, muscular over-use and many chronic pain syndromes. It can also greatly reduce the development of painful muscular patterning, if employed early enough after accidents involving trauma or injury. Massage can accelerate the rate of recovery and is a powerful adjunct in the treatment of both long-standing and acute injuries. Remedial massage is currently the most common form of therapy practiced.
2. Is massage covered under my Private Health insurance cover?
In many instances, (provided you have extras cover), you may be covered for remedial massage/myotherapy. However, you should consult your health insurer before attending as different insurers have differing policies.
3. What do I wear during a massage?
Generally you remove all clothing except undergarments. The therapist ensures your privacy and that you are properly draped, and only the portion of your body that is being massaged is exposed.
4. What training is required to become a Registered Massage Therapist?
To become a registered massage therapist requires enrollment in a government approved massage therapy school, eg. A graduate diploma of Myotherapy, RMIT Melbourne. Following enrollment, you must complete 1000 hours of clinical studies, including intensive practical instruction. To become registered under the Regulated Health Professions Act, examinations must be undertaken and passed once graduated.
Massage
Sports Massage is used by athletes at all levels to help prevent breakdown and injury. It is also used to help prevent an excessive build up of scar tissue following an injury and can stretch specific localised areas of soft tissue in a way that may not be possible with exercise:

>
Gentle and deep tissue massage
> Remedial massage
> Soft-tissue release
> Stretching
After a massage session, your body should feel more finely tuned, with better general circulation and relaxed muscles and soft-tissue. Regular sports massage between sporting activity will enhance your body's healing processes and speed recovery.
